WHAT LANGUAGE
SHOULD THE BOOKS BE WRITTEN IN?
The short answer: Spanish &
English
A longer answer:
We desperately need Spanish textbooks and accompanying workbooks
and teachers’ guides. All other books can be in Spanish or English,
although the priority is Spanish.
Why? For much of its
history the Bay Islands were English.
In 1859 a peace treaty gave the islands to Honduras. Islanders
continued to maintain their English heritage, including English-speaking
schools until 1985 when the Honduras government mandated the schools
must teach in Spanish. Today the Bay Islands are still bilingual, but
the schools still teach in Spanish. Current education goals include a
new curriculum that will be completely bilingual within five years.
WHERE
CAN YOU FIND BOOKS?
Chances are your
local school district gives or throws away older edition textbooks.
Please talk to your local school board and ask them to for
Spanish-language textbooks, workbooks, and teacher guides.
HOW
MANY TEXTBOOKS DO WE NEED?
Class sizes are 35 –
50 children, so larger quantities of textbooks are important. One or
two books can be used as references, but teachers prefer each child have
their own book in the classroom situation.
HOW
MANY FICTION, NON-FICTION, REFERENCE BOOKS ARE NEEDED?
There are
approximately 30,000 children on the island. Less than 1/3 attends
school. Since there are almost no schools with libraries, and there is
one library on the island, we need lots of reading books. One book of
50 of the same book will be perfect. Again, Spanish-language books head
the list; English stories are a close second.

All are happily accepted!
DONATIONS:
Many of
the items on the list are difficult and/or expensive to find in
Honduras. If you can pack new or used textbooks, reading & reference
books, puzzles, games, equipment, etc. – and ship them to our shipper in
Miami, we will handle the shipping and duty from Miami to Roatan.
Please include a list of items you have shipped.
MONEY:
We will use
money donations as directed by you. Just tell us what education theme
you want to support or specific items you want purchased. Patti and Bob
Beaumont, booking agents for the Bay Islands Beach Resort which is
spearheading this education campaign, will buy items in the states and
ship them to Roatan – or they will deposit the money into the education
