EVERY CHILD DESERVES A CHANCE!
Many children drop out of school because they can’t see the board or hear the teacher. Others miss unnecessary days from school because of contagious skin diseases from other children. This project brings health screening to the local schools, and encourages parents to find medical care for their children at local free clinics.
MOBILE LIBRARY
It will take us years to get libraries in all our schools. Using the traditional mobile library, we could take the books to the kids this year. Project requires a van, shelving, and BOOKS! On-going expenses would include: fuel, vehicle maintenance, salary for driver/librarian.
PLAYGROUND MATH
We want students to find math and physics interesting, to connect education with real-life success, and to learn job skills This project will do it all – and builds a playground for the school or community also!
WANTED: Someone to design plans for “How To Build A Playground” (see-saw, slide, swing, jungle gym, sand box) – with corresponding lesson plans for the teachers. These plans will help students:
1) Learn math, physics, construction techniques, weights and balance, fulcrums, angles; addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
2) Work on following directions, working together, creative problem-solving
3) Create something valuable to their community
4) Have fun while learning.
SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Scholarship program offers full and partial scholarships for gifted students. The goal is to increase the number of islanders who finish University-level courses. A university is now on the island of Roatan offering a limited number of bachelor degrees. The National University in Tegucigalpa offers a full range of degrees including business, law, education, & medicine.
Our goal is to work with teachers and community to identify students in upper primary and colegio level grades, to assist these children with education expenses until they are ready for university. Since the universities are 100% Spanish, we plan to match volunteers with the students to improve their Spanish, so they can focus on content of lectures rather than struggle with interpreting the language once there.
All donations for now will be pooled. Once we identify these 2007 candidates, we will post their pictures and a description of their dreams for the future. At that point, donations can be applied to a specific student, or to the general pool. The Committee will decide which children need extra support, tutoring, or other opportunities to make their schooling successful.
